Plant Overview

The wastewater treatment facility was constructed in 1979-1980 and became operational in September 1980. The treatment facility was expanded in 1992 to increase the BOD treatment capacity with the addition of a biological filter ahead of the existing rotating biological contactor (RBC) process. A schematic diagram of the Village of Denmark wastewater treatment facility is shown below.

Preliminary treatment includes a rotary fine screen followed by grit removal. A single 40-foot diameter primary clarifier provides primary treatment. A biological filter that reduces the BOD concentration to less than 30 mg/l provides secondary biological treatment. Rotating biological contactors (RBC's) follow the biological filter for nitrification of the wastewater to approximately 1 mg/l NH3-N. Two 30-foot diameter clarifiers provide final clarification followed by cascade aeration. Sludge treatment consists of a 40-foot diameter primary digester, a 40-foot secondary digester, and a 690,000 gallon mixed sludge storage tank for storage prior to land spreading.
